A memorable season ended for the Central Decatur cross country teams Thursday on a windy and cold day in Knoxville at Districts. 26 class 1A teams competed at the meet and the girls finished 12th and the boys 14th. Several season best races and quality races were run individually while both squads were missing a few key runners (Alex Foltz) and (Chaundra Ridgway).
The girls and boys teams have been able to field a scoring team all season and were able to finish the season with a team score. The number of participants in cross country this year was exciting and the way our athletes supported each others efforts this year was nice to see.
The girls were led by Bailey Boswell in a district race that was loaded. Bailey's last three races have been very good and she became a more consistent racer as the season progressed. She ended her high school career as the 7th fastest girl in school history. Trista Waddell ran solid as the teams 2nd runner and has had a great season, but struggled with the conditions today. Jordan Hullinger was the girls 3rd runner and ran her best race of the season and her fastest time of the year on a less than ideal day. Monica Irving aggravated a hamstring injury during the race on the hilly course and struggled but bravely finished the race to help the girls finish with a team score. Also, finishing her 4th race of the year was Monica Janssen who finished as the girls 5th runner to allow the girls to have a team score.

The boys were led by Sophomore Matt Marvin who continues to demonstrate mental toughness in the way he runs. Matt was in physical distress with a mile to go and somehow managed to finish and continue to compete all the way to the finish line. Matt ends his season as the 11th fastest runner in school history. Jacob Hayworth made a great aggressive effort to go after some top competition today and you can't succeed if you don't try. He ran his second fastest time of the year and provided great leadership for the boys team this year and finished his career as the 15th fastest in school history. Jordan Miner was the 3rd boy across the line for the Cardinals and he ran a huge pr and his best race of the season on a difficult day. Bill Hutchinson was the Cardinals 4th, Wyatt Duerr 5th, and David Huppert 6th across the line for the cardinals and they all ran their fastest times of the season.

One of our Jr High girls wrote a paper about the season which I believe is a reflection of the positive experience that many of the kids had this season. Many of these young athletes surprised themselves with their success this year and were able to overcome obstacles and challenges that were overwhelming at times. Facing difficult and stressful challenges together is a great bonding experience and these kids definitely came together as a team this season!
